NetDay has great information for schools wanting to carry out a do-it-yourself computer cabling project. While wireless technology has made great strides in recent years, nothing beats a cable in terms of speed and dependability.

One of the things I don't like about blogging is that visitors to the site are limited to interacting on the recent postings of the author. While sending an email message is an option, many people don't like anything the reveals their email address. So use the comments/ideas/information for this posting to suggest ideas for new topics.

"SLAX screenshots page: Slax is beautiful and small bootable CD with Linux. It contains all the software you like. SLAX runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. This system could make a very attractive alternative to the Linux Terminal Server Project. The LTSP would probably be better if you have a larger number of applications and a complex environment. SLAX could also be used as a backup system to the LTSP. Both ways are great ideas for very low-end computer hardware."

"Once installed K12LTSP lets you boot diskless workstations from an applications server. You can use old PC's as diskless clients or buy new ones for under $200 each."
This is one of the best ways to get additional life out of your old hardware. It requires a little Linux knowledge to get going, but once you are going with this system, it will not die.

"The idea behind Wikijunior is to produce a series of full-color glossy booklets (48 pp.; 8 ½ x 11) for a young audience (ages 8-11) on a variety of topics that interest kids. This can include Astronomy, Animals, Dinosaurs, Countries of the World, Science, History, and virtually anything else we can think of. The books will not be comprehensive. Instead, they can form various subseries, such as African Mammals, Jurassic Carnivores, South America, the French Revolution, etc.

This is more than an interesting new source of information for children, it can be an interesting way to create content. In fact, you can turn the creation of a Wiki Book into a learning experience. How you do this will depend on the age of the children.

This article reviews some of the software used to handle membership and donations. If you are in a private school, this type of software should be of great interest to you. While it is possible to much of this on your own via Access, I would recommend using a third-party system any time you deal with money -- especially if an audit is possible.
