This is one of the best ways to get additional life out of your old hardware. It requires a little Linux knowledge to get going, but once you are going with this system, it will not die.

I've been interested in something similar called SLAX. It's another Linux distro, but this allows you to boot from a cd or flash drive - it includes downloadable modules that can be used to customize any configuration. Best part is, you don't need to have any kind of hard drive installed at all. It sounds very similar, at least in cost savings, as what you're suggesting. The only real difference is that you wouldn't even need a server with SLAX...but that might be a good or bad thing...
That is a good point. I have used the CD-ROM distributions, but they have the problem of not storing information. That is important if the person is doing more than browsing.
Upgrading the flash drives might be a bit of a bother, but you do not have the problem with depending on a network connection or server. I will take a look at SLAX and make a posting on it.
